MTA Announces Presidents’ Day Weekend Service

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced several projects taking place over Presidents’ Day Weekend, between Friday, Feb. 17 and Tuesday, Feb. 21, which will impact service across the transit system. Work affecting service on the subways include Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) enhancements, Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) upgrades, Superstorm Sandy-related resiliency work, signal modernization, and track repair. 

For those traveling during the holiday, service details are below.

New York City Subway 
Service changes will be in effect from Friday, Feb. 17 at 9:45 p.m. through Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 5:00 a.m. 
•     Service Changes to accommodate ADA upgrades at 149 St/Grand Concourse and track work
o    No train service between 3 Av – 149 St and 135 St, free shuttle bus service provided
o     trains will run local between 72 St and Times Sq-42 St
o     train service suspended, trains replace trains between 148 St and 135 St, (bypassing 145 St both directions)
•     Service Changes to accommodate ADA and station upgrades at 149 St/Grand Concourse and Westchester Square stations
o     trains will run local between Atlantic Av – Barclays Center and Utica Av, extended to New Lots Av, replacing train service
o    No train between E 180 St and 149 St – Grand Concourse, customers are advised to use train and free shuttle bus instead
o    Pelham Bay Park-bound trains run express from Parkchester to Pelham Bay Park
•   Service Changes to accommodate track repair work
o    No trains between Mets-Willets Point and Main St, free shuttle bus service provided
o    Manhattan-bound trains run express from 74 St – Broadway to Queensboro Plaza
•     Service Changes to accommodate CBTC work
o    Downtown and late night trains run express from 59 St – Columbus Circle to Canal St
o   trains run local between Roosevelt Av – Jackson Heights and Queens Plaza
o    Manhattan-bound trains run express from Jamaica-Van Wyck to Kew Gardens-Union Tpke
•   Service Changes to accommodate CBTC switch and track work
o     trains run local between DeKalb Av and 36 St; Uptown trains run local from W 4 St to 34 St
o    Downtown trains run via from 5 Av – 53 St to W 4 St
o     trains run via between Roosevelt Av – Jackson Heights and 47-50 Streets -Rockefeller Center, free shuttle bus provided
o    No trains between Kings Highway and Stillwell Av; free shuttle bus service provided
o     trains run local between Roosevelt Av – Jackson Heights and Queens Plaza
o    Manhattan-bound trains run express from Parsons Blvd to Kew Gardens-Union Tpke
•     Service Changes to accommodate climate resiliency and power upgrades
o    No service between Kings Highway and Stillwell Av; free shuttle bus service provided
o     trains run local between DeKalb Av and 59 St – Lexington Av
o     and late night run via between Canal St and DeKalb Av; late night trains run between 59 St – Lexington Av and 95 St only

Staten Island Railway 
No SIR trains between Grasmere and Tottenville beginning Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1:00 a.m. through Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 4:00 a.m. Free shuttle bus service will be provided. SIR train service will operate between St. George and Grasmere during this time. Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, Feb. 20.

Access-A-Ride (AAR) Paratransit
AAR customers may make reservations 1-2 days in advance, 7 days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., including Presidents’ Day, Feb. 20, online at https://new.mta.info/accessibility/paratransit, via the MYmta app, or calling AAR at (877) 337-2017 or (718) 393-4999 and pressing prompt #2,

The AAR Command Center operates 24/7 to assist customers on the day of trip, such as confirming a reservation or ascertaining a vehicle’s estimated time of arrival. Customers should call (877) 337-2017 or (718) 393-4999 and press prompt #5.

Metro-North Railroad
On Monday, Feb. 20, Metro-North will run a Saturday schedule on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines. Hudson Rail Link buses and the Haverstraw-Ossining and Newburgh-Beacon ferries will not operate on President’s Day. The Port Jervis Line will operate on a holiday schedule, with two extra eastbound trains in the early morning and mid-afternoon from Port Jervis to Hoboken and one extra westbound train mid-day from Hoboken to Port Jervis. The Pascack Valley Line will operate on a weekend-holiday schedule. Off-peak fares are in effect all day on all Metro-North trains.

Long Island Rail Road 
Saturday, Feb. 18:
•    Hourly buses will replace train service on the Port Washington Branch between Manhasset and Port Washington while maintenance is performed. 
•    Train service will operate on half hour intervals between Penn Station and Great Neck
Saturday, Feb. 18 and Sunday, Feb. 19:
•    Buses will replace trains between Ronkonkoma and Greenport. Customers are advised to allow 30 minutes of additional travel time.
Monday, Feb. 20
•    Long Island Rail Road trains will operate on a Sunday schedule with off peak fares in effect all day.

Customers are encouraged to sign up to the MTA Weekender, a weekly newsletter sent every Friday to inform customers of weekend service changes throughout the transit system. Information about planned service changes is also available through the MTA’s many real-time service information sources. 

MYmta app – Customers who use the comprehensive MYmta app will see real-time travel information for all MTA services in one place. 

MTA.info – The “Service Status” box at new.MTA.info is always the definitive source for the latest status for each line. 

Live Subway Map – The Live Subway Map shows the real-time position of trains, planned service changes at any given time, highlight accessible stations, and much more. 

Twitter – Twitter users can follow @MTA, @NYCTSubway, @NYCTBus, @LIRR and @MetroNorth to receive service updates and customer service support. 

WhatsApp - NYC Transit incorporated using WhatsApp to expand the number of customer service channels available to riders and is especially helpful for non-native English speakers. Riders can receive customer service support in their native language through the help of Google Translate. 

For those who prefer to contact the MTA by telephone, information is available by dialing 511, the New York State Travel Information Line. For customers calling from Connecticut, the number is 877-690-5114. Those who are deaf or hard of hearing can use their preferred service provider for the free 711 relay to reach the MTA at 511.
