LIRR to Run 11 Extra Friday Afternoon Trains to Accommodate Holiday Travel
Three Metro-North Early Getaway Trains and Ferries to Run on Friday, Sept. 2
LIRR Montauk Sunday Return Trains Run on Monday, Sept. 5
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced service details for the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend for both the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad including supplementing early Friday afternoon service with additional trains to help New Yorkers get an early start on the three-day weekend.
Service details for each agency this Labor Day weekend are below:
Long Island Rail Road
On Friday, Sept. 2, the LIRR will run 11 extra afternoon trains to accommodate customers departing early for the holiday weekend. There is no scheduled trackwork for this weekend. For details, check the TrainTime app before traveling or visit new.mta.info.
On Saturday, Sept. 3, the LIRR will operate on a normal Saturday schedule.
On Sunday, Sept. the LIRR will operate on a Saturday schedule. The added return service from the Hamptons and Montauk will not operate Sunday, but will instead operate on Monday, Sept. 5.
On Monday, Sept. 5, the LIRR will operate on a weekend/holiday schedule with Montauk Branch trains running on a Sunday schedule. The 1:23 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and 6:37 p.m. trains from Montauk to Jamaica, and the 3:23 p.m. train from Southampton to Jamaica, usually scheduled to run Sundays, will run on Monday instead with added return service from the Hamptons and Montauk.
On Tuesday, Sept. 6, two extra Montauk Branch trains will run for those returning to New York City after the long holiday weekend. The 7:28 a.m. train from Montauk, which usually runs on summer Mondays, is instead scheduled to run on Tuesday. In addition, an extra westbound train will depart Patchogue Tuesday afternoon at 4:26 p.m., making all local stops to Babylon, where customers can transfer for connecting service to points west.

Metro-North Railroad
Metro-North Railroad will operate three early-getaway trains on the Hudson Line and two extra trains on the Harlem Line on Friday, Sept. 2, to allow customers to get an early start on the three-day holiday weekend. Two earlier ferry crossings will operate on the Haverstraw-Ossining route and three earlier crossings will operate on the Newburgh-Beacon route.
On the Hudson Line, there are extra Poughkeepsie express trains departing Grand Central Terminal (GCT) at 1:18 p.m. and 2:18 p.m., stopping at Harlem-125 St, Croton-Harmon and all stations to Poughkeepsie, and an extra Croton-Harmon local train departing GCT at 1:50 p.m., stopping at all stations to Croton-Harmon.
On the Harlem Line, there is one extra express train to White Plains and Southeast departing GCT at 1:16 p.m., stopping at Harlem-125 St, White Plains and all stations southeast, and an extra North White Plains local train departing GCT at 1:52 p.m., stopping at all stations to North White Plains.
On Metro-North’s connecting ferry services there will be two earlier crossings on the Haverstraw-Ossining route and three earlier crossings on the Newburgh-Beacon route.
Additional ferries depart Ossining at 3:36 p.m., connecting from the 2:20 p.m. GCT-Croton-Harmon local train and the 2:43 p.m. GCT-Poughkeepsie express train, and at 4:27 p.m., connecting from the 3:21 p.m. GCT-Croton-Harmon local train.
Additional ferries depart Newburgh at 4:19 p.m., connecting from the 2:43 p.m. GCT-Poughkeepsie express train, at 4:49 p.m., connecting from the 3:18 p.m. GCT-Poughkeepsie express train, and at 5:19 p.m., connecting from the 3:48 p.m. GCT-Poughkeepsie express train.
Metro-North will operate a normal Saturday schedule on Saturday, Sept. 3, and a Sunday schedule on both Sunday, Sept. 4 and Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5.
MTA Bridges and Tunnels
Routine maintenance and construction at all MTA Bridges and Tunnels crossings will cease at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1.
Daytime scheduled maintenance requiring full lane closures will be suspended beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2 through 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Critical roadwork may be permitted during overnight hours at times when traffic permits. Maximum roadway availability will be maintained during times of peak travel.
Customers are advised to check any of the MTA’s multiple communications channels listed below before traveling.
New York City Transit
Crews will use the Labor Day weekend to perform critical track maintenance and repairs. The planned service changes will begin Friday, Sept. 2. Some of the service changes are expected to last through Tuesday morning, Sept. 6, while other service changes will happen only on Saturday and Sunday.
During the Labor Day Weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, the subway will run on a regular weekend schedule. On Labor Day, the subway will run on a Sunday schedule. That means there will be no service on the , and trains; no express or trains; and no express trains in Brooklyn.
New York City Transit uses three-day weekends to work on infrastructure projects and upgrades such as accessibility, track maintenance, cable repair, switch replacement and so much more at stations. Maintaining a state of good repair on tracks, signals, replacing worn-out parts and upgrading the system’s infrastructure are critical in making sure trains run reliably.
Access-A-Ride (AAR) Paratransit
AAR customers may make reservations 7 days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. by calling AAR at (877) 337-2017 or (718) 393-4999 and pressing prompt #2, online at https://new.mta.info/accessibility/paratransit, or via the MYmta app.
The AAR Command Center operates 24/7 to assist customers on the day of trip, such as confirming a reservation or ascertaining a vehicle’s estimated time of arrival. Customers should call (877) 337-2017 or (718) 393-4999 and press prompt #5.
