Tips for using the MTA app

Updated Apr 12, 2024
The latest version of the MTA app makes it easier than ever to get details on subway, bus, and railroad service. Here’s how to get the most out of it.

Add and edit Favorites for use in the "Explore" and "Status" tabs

You add stations, lines, and places (addresses) as Favorites for use in the "Explore" and "Status" tabs. There are a few ways to do this:

From "Nearby" in the "Explore" tab:

  • Find the stop or station nearby that you want to save. Tap the star icon next to the stop or station name to add it as a Favorite.

From "Favorites" in the "Explore" or "More" tab:

  • Tap "Add Favorites."
  • Search for a station, line, or address in the "Station, Line, Places" box and tap on the star icon next to the search result you want to add.
  • Or, scroll to find the line, station, or place you want to add.
    • To add a line or route, tap the star next to its name.
    • To add a station or stop, tap the line or route it's on. Then, tap on the station or stop on the screen for the line or route. Finally, tap on the star on the screen for that station or stop.
  • When you're finished, tap "Done" in the top right corner of the screen.

To edit Favorites, from "Favorites" in the "Explore" or "More" tab:

  • Tap "Edit Favorites."
    • To reorder categories of Favorites, like Lines or Stations, drag the icon to the left of the category name.
    • To reorder individual Favorites, drag the icon to the right of the name of the Favorite.
    • To delete a Favorite, swipe left on the Favorite or tap the trash icon to the left of its name.
  • When you're finished, tap "Done" in the top right corner of the screen.

Add trips to Favorites

In addition to stations, lines, and places, you can also add trips to Favorites.

  • In the "Plan Trip" tab, plan a trip by entering your desired "From" and "To" points.
  • Tap any of the trip plans on the screen.
  • On the trip plan screen, tap the star on the right side of the screen below the map. The "From" and "To" points of your trip will be added to your Favorites.

Find buses on the map

You can view approaching buses on the map by selecting your bus stop in the "Explore" tab.

You can also see live buses by selecting a bus stop on your route's stop list.

  • In the "Explore" tab, enter or select a bus route, then confirm the direction of the bus route. Find and tap your stop.
  • In the "Status" tab, select a bus route from the bus tab or your favorites list, then confirm the direction of the bus route. Find and tap your stop.

We're working to add live buses to the bus route-level views in both the "Explore" and "Status" tabs soon.

Select which modes, such as bus or subway, show in the "Explore" tab

In the "Explore" tab, tap the Map Settings icon in the bottom right corner of the map. Then, under "Show stops and stations," tap each mode to show or hide it from the map.

Log in to Access-A-Ride

The MTA app includes the MY AAR booking system, which is the best place to book, modify, and track your AAR trip.

If you use the MYmta app now to book your trips, you will need to sign in to your AAR account again in the new version. The sign-in page is located in a different place than it was before. Here's how to sign in:

  • Open the app, and tap on the "More" tab at the bottom right of the home screen.
  • Tap the "Sign in to AAR Account" option in the middle of the screen.
  • From there, you will be taken to the login screen for your MY AAR account.

Once you have signed in, the app will add an AAR button to the bottom menu. Tap on that for the exact same MY AAR services you have been using.

If you experience issues while using the app, please call AAR at 877-337-2017 and listen carefully to the directory choices to find the one that best addresses your needs. Our AAR reservationists are available to book your trips everyday form 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

See Planned Service Changes

We've added a Planned Service Changes lookup tool in a recent app release (v3.4.0). Update to the latest version, and check Status for Subway, Bus, or Rail.

See bus numbers and crowding information

We've added these in a recent app release (v3.5.0). Update to the latest version, and you'll see this information for bus trips (when available).

See all the subway lines on a map

We know the subway route lines are often messy when you select a station in "Explore"—we're working on tidying that up.

Showing all subway lines on the "Explore" map is also on our roadmap.

Send us feedback about the app

We're continuing to improve the app based on your feedback, so please let us know what you think. You can do that right in the app by going to the "App Feedback" link in the "More" tab.
