Accessible Wide Fare Gates

Updated Jan 29, 2021

What we tested

At Jay St-MetroTech, we were able to show a new accessible wide fare gate we’ve set up for demonstration purposes. You may recognize this style of fare gate, with its "saloon style" doors, from other local systems like PATH, and other transit systems across the country and world.

We want to make it fast and convenient for our riders to get into and out of stations. This style of fare gate gives you extra room to navigate, whether you use a wheelchair, walker, or other mobility device, have a service animal, or push a stroller or suitcase.

What happens next

Our goal is to start installing gates like this in the next few years, to replace the existing AutoGate and make it easier for riders to enter and exit the subway system.

We are currently working with Cubic, who built this gate, to design an accessible fare gate specifically for the New York City Transit subway system. Once we start installing them, they will accept both MetroCard and OMNY payment.

We want to hear from you

As we test this gate and work on the design, we want to know what you think! Let us know what you do and don’t like about this gate by contacting us at accessibility@nyct.com.
