Installing new track and replacing switches on the 1 line

Get service change information about the 1 line while we work to replace track and switches north of 137 St.

We’re replacing old track and old switches, all at the end of their useful lives. The work is intense and requires partial service suspensions during nights and weekends in the winter of 2021. We’ve compiled all the service changes here, and provided alternative options for you to get around while we complete this important work. When we’re done, the new track and new switches will help provide flexible, reliable service for years to come.

What we’re doing

Track work between 145 and 168 St

Track on this stretch of the is over 35 years old – well past its prime. Replacing it now means that we can avoid unpredictable headaches and delays and ensure more reliable and consistent service.

Replacing track is an intense process. Doing the work all at once in one continuous stretch means we can get it done faster, better, and more efficiently. This interruption in normal service will provide benefits for decades.

Switch work at 185 and 189A/B at Dyckman St

The switches we’re replacing are at the very end of their useful lives at 31 years of age. We use these switches to move 1 trains to and from the middle track when there are diversions or outages on the line. Without these switches, service on the would grind to a halt whenever an issue arose that required a train to stop unexpectedly, like when a train has to hold in the station or if there’s an issue in the tunnels connecting stations.

Maintenance

We'll also be taking care of a number of important maintenance projects while this section of the is shut down, including repairing a switch at 238th St. As with all of our track closures, we make every effort to complete as many projects as possible to minimize future closures.
