How service will run while we work
For three weekends in October, there will be significant changes to D N R service and station closures along much of 4th Ave in Brooklyn. We will need uninterrupted access to the track bed during the following three weekends:
- October 9-12; 9:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday
- October 16-19; 9:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday
- October 23-26; 9:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday
During these times:
D and R trains will not operate between Manhattan and Brooklyn:
- D trains run in two sections: Between 205 St (Bronx) and 34 St-Herald Sq (Manhattan)
- Between 9 Av and Stillwell Av (Brooklyn)
- A shuttle bus replaces D service between Broadway-Lafayette Sts and Grand St (Manhattan)
R trains run in two sections:
- Between 71 Av and Whitehall St (Queens to Lower Manhattan)
- Between 36 St and Bay Ridge-95 St (Brooklyn)
N trains provide connections between Manhattan and Brooklyn, but run in two sections:
- N trains run via the R line between Canal St (Manhattan) and Atlantic Av-Barclays Center (Brooklyn) and make express stops on the Q line between Atlantic Av-Barclays Center and Brighton Beach (Brooklyn)
- N trains will also run between 36 St and Stillwell Av (Brooklyn)
Shuttle buses replace all DNR train service between Atlantic Av-Barclays Center and 9 Av (Brooklyn).
There will be other overnight and weekend service changes occurring from now through November 6, 2020. These service changes will be detailed on our Planned Service Change page in advance.
How to get around while we work
- Take F N Q trains for uninterrupted service between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
- Between Southern Brooklyn and points north, take a shuttle bus between 36 St and Atlantic Av-Barclays Center, or take D N trains to Stillwell Av for F Q service.
- Along 4 Av, transfer between shuttle buses and F trains at 4 Av-9 St.
- In Manhattan, transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq to F N and Q trains for service between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
- F trains also provide connections to shuttle buses for D service between Broadway-Lafayette Sts and Grand St.

Replacing track switches for more reliable service
Switches are some of the most important pieces of equipment in the subway system. They help us maintain flexibility, so when we need to divert trains around an issue, we can do more easily and with fewer delays. But like everything else, they wear down over time. By proactively replacing switches, we can avoid much bigger problems in the near future. The switches near Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr are 24 years old and near the end of their useful lives. The switches are located on a curve, which makes them more prone to wear and tear. If we don’t remove and replace them soon, they’ll be more of a headache than a help.
Replacing switches is no easy task – it requires us to completely remove the switches themselves, the surrounding track, and all the mechanical and electrical components that make the switches work, and replace them with new ones. And it requires us to have direct, uninterrupted access to the track, which means we can’t run trains through the area while we’re working.

These switches provide critical operational flexibility during planned and unplanned service changes. By replacing them now, we can ensure they won’t fail when we need them most. For you, that means we can divert and reroute your train around issues on the line more easily, smoothly, and reliably.
