Proposed changes to the Bx6 SBS route alignment, Bx6 Local schedule, and Bx5 schedule will be implemented in 2023 while the rest of the Bronx Redesign Local Plan will be implemented in Summer 2022. This is to avoid the cost of construction associated with installing on-street fare machines that would be needed for approximately one year. Therefore, bus customers should plan to see the proposed changes outlined below implemented in 2023 when MetroCards are retired and OMNY is fully deployed.

Review the Bx6 SBS Route Summary

Route

The Bx6 Select Bus Service routing will change. To improve crosstown connections, the Bx6 Select Bus Service will be rerouted along Bruckner Boulevard, Bronx River Avenue, and Story Avenue to a new eastern terminal at Turnbull and Pugsley avenues. The route will no longer serve Hunts Point, which will continue to be served by Bx6 Local Service. This new routing will introduce additional connections for Bx5 riders and will provide faster crosstown service along Story Avenue for Soundview residents.

Key connecting routes include: Bx5Bx6Bx13Bx15, and Bx19.

Stops

No bus stops will be removed, apart from those along the discontinued segment serving Hunts Point. However, ten new stops will be added to accommodate the proposed segment serving Story Avenue and terminating at Turnbull and Pugsley avenues. The Bx6 SBS average distance between stops will remain 2,285 feet.

See the route profile with full stop list.

Schedule

The Bx6 SBS schedule will not change. The Bx6 SBS will have the same service frequency and span as it currently does. Where the Bx6 SBS and Bx6 Local overlap, the combined frequency will remain the same. Where the Bx6 SBS and Bx5 overlap on Story Avenue, the combined weekday frequency will be every 3 minutes in the AM peak, every 6 minutes in the midday, and every 4 minutes in the PM peak. Due to the routing change, ridership will be closely monitored, and schedules will be adjusted accordingly.
