The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today welcomed the 2022 baseball season by offering Yankee fans express service for the team’s home opener against the Boston Red Sox on two historic trains, The Nostalgia Train and The Train of Many Colors. The trains departed 42 St-Grand Central at 11:00 a.m. for the trip to 161 St-Yankee Stadium. New York City Transit Senior Vice President of Subways, Demetrius Crichlow, and the Director of the New York Transit Museum, Concetta Bencivenga, met fans at 42 St-Grand Central.
The Nostalgia Train, the 1917 IRT Lo-V subway train, which usually makes an annual debut for the Yankee home opener, returned for the first time since the pandemic. However, this year, it was accompanied by an additional nostalgia train, the Train of Many Colors. Both trains arrived at 42 St-Grand Central, where a crowd of Yankee fans, and rail fans alike, awaited their turn to board the historic sets of cars on a non-stop ride on the Lexington Av line to 161 St-Yankee Stadium in 25 minutes, arriving in plenty of time before the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
“It is exciting to be able to get our old equipment out as fresh as our new equipment operating to Yankee Stadium,” said New York City Transit Senior Vice President of Subways Demetrius Crichlow, "and to see how many people chose to join and enjoy a piece of transit history as their way to the Yankees’ Home Opener.”
“This is an experience that started in 2004 for the centennial of the New York City subway system, and it is just a beloved tradition now,” said Director of the NYC Transit Museum Concetta Bencivenga. “We are delighted, after a two-year hiatus, to be able to bring it back.”
About The Nostalgia Train
Originally operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) system, The Nostalgia Train began service in 1917. The vintage train cars and hundreds of other similar cars served subway customers a few years before the first pitch was thrown at the original Yankee Stadium. With rattan seats, ceiling fans and drop sash windows, the train harkens back to an earlier age of subway travel and provides a photogenic counterpoint to the new home of the New York Yankees.
About the Train of Many Colors
The Train of Many Colors is comprised of vintage IRT rolling stock. Configured of two types of subway cars, the R-33 and R-36, and varying colors including red, grey, green, even the “cream and robin’s egg blue,” the Train of Many Colors takes riders back to a time when train cars used to sport painted bodies.
