New York City Transit (NYCT) President Richard Davey today highlighted the importance of bus lane enforcement and combatting violations by riding a westbound M42 bus from Second Avenue and personally writing tickets for vehicles illegally blocking the lane on 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan. Bus lanes across New York City are violated by vehicles blocking the right of way for buses – impacting bus speeds, slowing service for riders, and making it difficult for disabled New Yorkers to access deployable ramps to enter and exit buses. President Davey spotlighted the citywide problem of bus lane violations by writing a total of four tickets to commercial vehicles parked illegally.
“Bus customers are asking for better speeds, shorter wait times, and more reliability,” said New York City Transit President Richard Davey. “Keeping bus lanes and bus stops free of illegal vehicles will help make that a reality. Drivers blocking buses should ask themselves one question: am I a bus? If the answer is no, get out of the bus lane or bus stop.”
In 2021, there were more than 551,000 fixed camera violations for blocking bus lanes and over 51,000 Automated Bus Lane Enforcement (ABLE) bus-mounted camera violations with tickets issued to violators.
