Part of Broader MTA Effort to Offer Customer-Friendly Digital Solutions

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that its ‘Tolls NY’ app, which helps customers easily manage toll bill payments and E-ZPass accounts from their phone, reached one million downloads since launching in 2020. The International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) also recognized the free smartphone app with a Toll Excellence Award in Customer Service and Marketing Outreach. The app was created in collaboration with the New York State Thruway Authority, The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and Conduent Transportation.

“This app is the result of real collaboration between MTA Bridges and Tunnels, our industry partners and, most importantly, our customers,” said Daniel DeCrescenzo, Jr., President of MTA Bridges and Tunnels. “I want to thank our customers for helping us reach one million downloads, and IBTTA for recognizing our efforts with the Toll Excellence Award.”

“With more than one million downloads and counting, the Tolls NY app is already improving the customer experience for drivers traveling in one of the country’s busiest metropolitan areas,” said Mark Compton, CEO of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and IBTTA President. “MTA Bridges and Tunnels and its partners on this project deserve recognition for building this app with so much customer input beforehand, yielding a new tool that benefits toll users and toll operators equally.”

The Tolls NY app has collected over $70 million in payments since its release. MTA Bridges and Tunnels has sent more than three million alerts through the app to keep customers informed about policy updates such as toll rate changes. The app also allows drivers using rental cars to skip the complicated middleman and interact directly to pay their tolls at a fair rate.

Within the app, customers are able to:

  • Manage E-ZPassaccounts, including checking their account balance, adding funds or setting up automatic payments
  • Update E-ZPassaccount profile, including vehicle information
  • Pay Tolls by Mail bills quickly and easily before receiving an invoice
  • View toll and payment history

In addition to account information, customers can find frequently asked questions, “how to” videos, and contact information for customer service centers, and can leave feedback for the app’s developers.

Tolls NY is part of a broader MTA effort to bring customer-friendly digital solutions to customers, along with the OMNY tap-and-go system on subways and buses and TrainTime apps on Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road.

Customers with an iPhone can download the free app through the Apple App store and Android users can download it through the Google Play store. The Tolls NY app is also available for Port Authority of NY & NJ and NYS Thruway customers.
