Following yesterday’s torrential rainfall, MTA Metro-North Railroad is restoring full scheduled service on the Danbury Branch today, Monday, Aug. 19, in time for the evening rush. The first train to operate will be the 5:07 p.m. train from Grand Central to Danbury.

Train service on the Waterbury Branch remains suspended due to significant damage, including a severe mudslide midway between Seymour and Ansonia stations. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., extremely limited bus service will operate between Bridgeport and Waterbury, bypassing Seymour due to severe roadway flooding. Customers are strongly advised to use alternate lines where possible. The Harlem, Hudson and New Haven lines are running normal service.

“We’re glad to have made great progress to restore service on the Danbury Branch in time for today’s afternoon rush hour,” said Metro-North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi. “We appreciate the patience of our Waterbury Branch customers as crews work as quickly and safely as possible to restore service on the branch, where there is more significant damage caused by yesterday’s catastrophic rain.”

Due to storm-related flooding of the Nissequogue River near Smithtown, LIRR train service is suspended east of Kings Park on the Port Jefferson Branch. Limited train service is operating between Huntington and Kings Park.

For this evening’s rush hour, customers are strongly advised to avoid the Port Jefferson Branch for travel east of Huntington and to consider use of alternate branches, like the Ronkonkoma and Montauk branches. It is likely that these conditions will continue into Tuesday morning’s rush hour.

The cause of the flooding appears to be related to a burst dam in Blydenburgh County Park.  LIRR personnel are working closely to assess the damage with officials from Suffolk County and the Town of Smithtown.
