Updated January 23, 2022 8:00 p.m.

Two New Elevators and Additional New and Upgraded Features Will Make Station Fully Accessible and Improve Customer Experience
B48 Bus Route Will Operate Along Union Avenue Instead of Lorimer Street Between Meeker Avenue and Grand Street Beginning Monday, Jan. 24

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today provided an update on construction to make the Lorimer Street  subway station fully accessible in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These upgrades will provide street and platform elevators, among other improvements including new elevators, raised boarding areas, ADA-compliant sidewalk curbs, token booth modifications and Braille signage
Supplementary to accessibility upgrades, the station will receive added improvements including new public staircases, flood resiliency, and structural improvements in addition to new artwork, increased electrical capacity, a fire alarm, and new CCTV.
“Accessibility is at the heart of the MTA’s mission and a top priority in all we do,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. “Commuters depend on a reliable and accessible transit system and these elevators will create a more seamless travel experience for all, especially riders with mobility disabilities, seniors, and parents of young children.”
"The  train is near and dear to my heart,” said New York City Transit Interim President Craig Cipriano. “I grew up riding the  train, and I am thrilled about the ADA upgrades that will ensure everyone in the Lorimer Street community can enjoy using the subway.”
This project demonstrates our ongoing commitment to best serve all our riders, including those with mobility disabilities,” said MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “This investment will improve the daily experience of riders and represents another critical step toward a more accessible transit system.”
"I'm excited that we are continuing to move forward on this important accessibility project," said MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo. "The faster we can complete each of these station projects, the sooner we will start delivering equitable access to all our customers.”
"These new elevators at Lorimer Street station builds on the vision of a more accessible system becoming a reality and we look forward to continuing this work,” said Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and MTA Board Member Victor Calise.
This is a part of a larger project within the MTA Capital Program to upgrade eight stations throughout the five boroughs. The design-build contract was awarded Dec. 31, 2020. Construction is expected to conclude in 2023.
Service Changes:
MTA is advising customers on changes to the B48 bus route to accommodate important construction of elevators at the Lorimer Street  Station. Due to the construction, Lorimer Street will be temporarily converted to one-way northbound between Ainslie Street and Skillman Avenue. Because of this temporary one-way conversion, the B48 bus route will be detoured from Lorimer Street between Meeker Avenue and Grand Street. It will operate along Union Avenue between these streets. This temporary detour will be in place until construction activity allows for regular traffic patterns to return to Lorimer Street, expected in 2023.
