Work Was Completed on Time and On Budget; Accessibility Improvements on Several Other Stations Expected to Be Completed This Month

MTA New York City Transit officials today announced the completion of the final phase of a three-part, year-long project to enhance accessibility and improve the station environment at the Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway   subway station in Brooklyn. The third and final phase of the work, which was conducted almost entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic, brought a new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant ramp in addition to new lighting and signage, an upgraded PA system and other amenities to the   line's terminal station. The work was completed on time and on budget. The most recent phase of work also included the completion of new facility rooms for employees and managers who use the station each day.

Previous phases of the project were focused on upgrades to the bus infrastructure at the intermodal facility as well as a host of structural and aesthetic upgrades, including the addition of an accessible restroom and four new turnstiles. The bus facility at Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway also features a new ADA compliant ramp. New roofing, masonry, and concrete work was included as part of the station improvements.

"We had teams working relentlessly to keep this project on schedule and on budget despite the immense challenges of COVID-19," said Interim New York City Transit President Sarah Feinberg. "Our Canarsie customers and our hard-working employees who begin and end their day at the Canarsie-Rockaway Park station will be greeted with a markedly improved station complex and our customers with disabilities will have an easier time navigating the area as well."

Additional accessibility improvements including new elevator openings are expected to be completed in the coming weeks at the Bedford Avenue and 1 Avenue   stations, the 86th St   station in Brooklyn, and at the Astoria Blvd   station.
