MTA Announces Service Options for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Subway, LIRR, and Staten Island Railway Operating on a Regular Weekday Schedule

Major Service Changes on the A Line and Rockaway Shuttle Due to Resiliency Project

 The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced today that some services will operate on special schedules in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20.

For those traveling during the holiday, service details are below. 

New York City Subway

Most subway lines and Staten Island Railway will operate on a regular weekday schedule.  

M train service will operate between Metropolitan Ave and Myrtle Ave. train service will operate between Hewes St and Jamaica Center.  

There will be no train service.  

Shuttle buses will operate between Essex St and Hewes St.  

Please note that from Jan. 17 through May 2025, A trains will not run between Howard Beach-JFK Airport and Far Rockaway-Mott Av or Rockaway Park-Beach 116 St, and S Rockaway Park Shuttle trains will not operate to or from Broad Channel due to completion of critical repairs to aging infrastructure in the Rockaways to make the peninsula’s public transportation more resilient against climate change.   

The S Shuttle train will serve all stations between Rockaway Park and Far Rockaway, and free shuttle buses will operate along two routes: the Q97 will run non-stop between Howard Beach and Far Rockaway via Nassau Expressway. The Q109 will run from Howard Beach to Beach 67 St via Broad Channel and Beach 90 St.   

New York City Buses 

Buses will run on a modified weekday schedule, with special schedules for some express bus routes.   

Access-A-Ride

Paratransit will operate full 24/7 service throughout the day.  

Long Island Rail Road 

LIRR will operate on a regular weekday schedule.  

Metro-North Railroad

The Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines will operate a Saturday schedule with additional train services during the normally peak periods.  

On the Port Jervis Line, Metro-North will operate a weekend service with additional train services during the normally peak periods.  

Metro-North will operate a weekend service schedule on the Pascack Valley Line.  

Hudson Rail Link shuttle buses in the Bronx will operate on a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day schedule to meet trains at Spuyten Duyvil and Riverdale.  

The Haverstraw-Ossining ferry is operating as a substitute bus service between Haverstraw and Tarrytown because of icing on the Hudson River and will operate on a modified schedule to meet trains at Tarrytown.   

The Newburgh-Beacon ferry schedule will operate on a modified schedule to meet trains at Beacon.   

Bridges and Tunnels 

MTA Bridges and Tunnels will operate with normal weekday lane closures.  

Channels for Service Updates 

For real-time service updates and information, customers can use the following options:  

MTA app – Customers who use the comprehensive MTA smartphone app will see real-time travel information for all MTA services all in one place.   

TrainTime app - The MTA’s TrainTime app is the one-stop app for commuter rail customers in the region on both Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, showing all train schedules for 30 days in the future. 

mta.info – The “Service Status” box at mta.info is always the definitive source for the latest status for each line. 

MTA Weekender – Customers can sign up for the “MTA Weekender,” a weekly digest of major weekend service changes throughout the transit system.      

X – X users can follow @MTA, @NYCTSubway, and @NYCTBus for service updates and customer service support.    

WhatsApp – Customers can chat with NYC Transit via WhatsApp. Riders can receive customer service support in their native language through the help of Google Translate.
