Our open data plan
The MTA moves millions of people every day, and we work hard to build trust and confidence in MTA services. It’s critical that public transit is safe, reliable, and fast — and that the public has input on our ongoing efforts to improve. We aim to share as much data that is in the public interest as we can, and to work with the community to understand their priorities.
Our commitment
The MTA is committed to being open and accountable to the public, and today has a robust program to share a wide array of information. We welcome external review and validation of our work, and value the increased trust in our work that will bring. We also value third-party use of our data in innovative ways: to provide better customer information and service, and to propose new analytical approaches our teams can consider and use. You can read more about what we’re doing beyond Open Data to further our transparency in our Annual Open Data Plan Update.
Under our renewed Open Data Program, we have begun to share substantially more data and make it easier to find and use. We promise to:
- Submit all data that we already make public on this website to the NYS Open Data Portal.
- Publish the data that we release via our monthly Board and Committee books.
- Publish our plan and schedule for sharing to the NYS Open Data Portal all publishable agency data (completed in April 2022).
- Implement our plan over the next two years.
Our team
The MTA Open Data program is managed by the Data & Analytics team, the MTA's center of excellence in the management, usage and sharing of data. Our three main functions are to aggregate the MTA’s many diverse data sources, to devise and automate creative analyses that uncover the valuable insights in that data, and to share these products and skills.
We do this work for all levels of the MTA, from the board and senior executives to front-line managers and the public. Our work includes building data pipelines to automate processes, calculating performance metrics for subway and bus service, maintaining critical datasets for internal and external use, and providing analytic support for executive leadership, as well as managing the MTA’s Open Data program. We share the data that our team maintains to all who need to query it so they can build their own reports from it. An important goal of our team is to facilitate the work of others analyzing MTA data.
We do all this by combining new approaches and algorithms with a deep knowledge of our operations to deliver deeper insights into issues affecting MTA’s performance. You’ll find our team’s work in lots of places: the MTA’s board and committee books, the New York State Open Data portal, the MTA’s metrics site, numerous internal datasets, the occasional news article, and the MTA Data & Analytics blog.
