The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced the completion of new platforms and other transformative upgrades at the Long Island Rail Road’s Lynbrook station. The four-track elevated station features two new island platforms, platform canopies and other customer-friendly amenities. The $17.9 million dollar enhancement initiative was funded through the 2015-19 MTA Capital Plan. Work on the station began May 2019 and has been completed one month ahead of schedule.

“Our team has had tremendous success delivering projects on Long Island - including Third Track, Double Track and here at the Lynbrook Station,” said MTA Construction & Development President Janno Lieber. “We are proving we can get work done better, faster and cheaper, but in order to continue this progress during this time of financial uncertainty we need the Federal government to step in and support mass transit.”

"The upgrades at this station are the result of the partnerships and teamwork that allow the LIRR to connect communities, and work with community leaders and elected officials who understand the importance of taking action," said LIRR President Phil Eng. "I’m thankful for Governor Cuomo’s leadership and his bold vision regarding infrastructure rebuilding and I'm proud of our workforce and small business mentor contractors for for working through the challenges of these unprecedented times and helping to improve the quality of life on Long Island."

"I'm pleased to see that after years of cooperation between the Village of Lynbrook and the state, Lynbrook residents will now have access to a safe and modern train platform that will improve the quality of our commutes," said Senator Todd Kaminsky. "These upgrades have brought the platform into the 21st century, which is a remarkable transformation from its prior pre-war state. I'm excited for Lynbrook residents to take advantage of the upgrades."

“After numerous meetings, I am so proud to see the completion of the Lynbrook Platform Level Improvements which really offers Lynbrook commuters a long awaited new and improved station to ease and enhance the commute. I want to thank Long Island Railroad President Phil Eng for his diligent work on this major project and my partner in government Senator Todd Kaminsky, as well as Mayor Beach for working together to push this across the finish line. I will continue to work diligently to ensure that commuters experience a reliable, safe, and comfortable commute and this new Lynbrook station will do just that," said Assemblymember Judy Griffin.

“Long Island Rail Road President Eng and Sr. Director of External Affairs Hector Garcia have been extremely cooperative in getting this much needed work done during a global pandemic,” said Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach. “Lynbrook is one of Long Island’s premier villages and now it will have a premier train station to compliment the resurgence happening in our downtown corridor.”

Work on Platform A and Platform B began in September of last year at the west end of each platform. Platforms were resealed and tactile warning strips and platform edges were power-washed and repainted. Platform lighting was upgraded and new translucent canopy roofing was installed atop all six platform canopies, three on each platform. Platform B, serving the Long Beach branch, was constructed first by JMJ Electric and Platform A, serving the Babylon branch, was constructed by Zion Construction.

Other advances at the station include:

  • Improvements to the existing drainage system
  • Two new glass platform waiting rooms
  • New signage throughout the platforms
  • The installation of LED lighting and security cameras

The station, which is located at Sunrise Highway and Peninsula Boulevard in the Village of Lynbrook, was built in 1936 and serves approximately 5,000 weekday riders. It serves Long Beach Branch and Babylon Branch customers and is accessible to wheelchair users through elevator access.

A separate project to rebuild the Lynbrook Viaduct is underway and being done in conjunction with the rehabilitation of the neighboring Rockville Centre Viaduct. Work on both projects began in August 2019 and will prolong the life of the viaducts. Repairs are expected to be completed summer 2021.

The rehabilitated Lynbrook Station is part of a broader effort to modernize LIRR rail stations and contribute to the economic development of the region.
