The application period for Transit Cleaner has closed. All applicants will receive a random list number via email by September 30, 2022.

The MTA expects to begin scheduling applicants in random list number order for further consideration for appointment to Transit Cleaner in October 2022. Applicants will be scheduled to participate in the selection process as vacancies occur and will be contacted only if their list number is reached.

The Selection process includes the following components:

  • English language proficiency assessment
  • Verification of identity
    • Permanent work authorization in the United States
  • Drug screening
  • Medical evaluation
  • Vaccination requirement
    • As of November 14, 2021, MTA New York City Transit required all new hires to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. “Fully vaccinated" means having received both doses of a two-dose vaccine and two weeks have elapsed since the second dose, or having received a single-dose vaccine and two weeks have elapsed since the dose. MTA Cleaners play a critical role in this commitment to our customers — and we're looking for people to join the team.

What a Transit Cleaner does

Transit Cleaners sweep and wash subways and elevated stations, including steps, platforms, mezzanines, toilets, and related rooms and enclosures. They measure and mix cleaning chemicals, clean biological waste and sanitize effected areas. Transit Cleaners operate cleaning equipment, such as pressure washers, vacuums and sweepers, and perform light maintenance work on this equipment. 

Transit Cleaners are also responsible for cleaning the interiors and exteriors of subway cars and buses in shops, depots, and on the road.  They also shovel snow and perform related tasks.

Compensation and benefits

The starting rate of pay is $19.03 per hour, increasing to $31.71 per hour after six years of employment.
