The Station Re-NEW-vation Program uses the 55-hour window provided by planned weekend service outages to clean, scrub, scrape, paint, brighten, repair, retile, refurbish, renovate, and renew stations from top to bottom. On Monday morning, when service is restored, customers return to an overhauled station. This program is one of the major initiatives in New York City Transit’s Faster, Cleaner, Safer plan to improve the subway customer experience.
Re-NEW-vations aren't just about cleaning. They're about showing stations some love by:
- Upgrading lightbulbs to brighter energy efficient LEDs
- Removing HVAC systems
- Unclogging drains and mitigating leaks
- Giving stations a fresh coat of paint
- Repairing broken concrete
- Re-NEW-vating and restoring benches
- Replacing broken and damaged tile
At some stations, Re-NEW-vations include additional work, such as:
- Installing ADA-compliant tactile edge warning systems at Roosevelt Island
- Scraping and painting the entire platform canopy at Rockaway Park-Beach 116 St
- Repainting the mezzanine shed structure at Marble Hill-225 St
- Rebuilding two entire staircases at Junction Blvd
- Replacing over 12,000 sq. ft. of subway tile at 157 St
- Significant roof repairs to shelter customers during heavy rains at Canarsie-Rockaway Pkwy
We've Re-NEW-vated over 100 stations across the city so far, and we're planning to Re-NEW-vate 50 more each year. So far we've completed the following work:
- 4.18 million square feet of repainted surfaces
- 106,725 square feet of wall tile replaced
- 6,030 square feet of floor tiles replaced
- 2,186 new or replacement metal signs fabricated and installed
- 282 decals fabricated and installed
- 224 outdated, damaged, or unnecessary signs or map frames removed
- 104 signs or mounting brackets repaired
It's all designed to give riders a cleaner, brighter, more pleasant experience in the subway system.
