About the project

“Tranquility” features 12 faceted glass windscreen panels at the Mount Vernon station. Together the panels convey the shimmering quality of Impressionism in stained glass. The artwork creates the atmosphere of the country through the artist’s imagery and color palette. As its title implies, the work is calming in its depiction of a natural environment with a grove of trees, a lake, and sky, in shades of green, blue, and yellow. The artist, Marjorie Blackwell wanted "the colors and how they are shaped and dance across the windscreen" to give commuters "something to play with, meditate with, and connect with at the station."

About the artist

Artist and educator Marjorie Blackwell uses paints and drawing implements to explore a deep attraction to color and nature. Through her works, Blackwell couples her appreciation for nature with her spiritual beliefs from Taoist and Celtic traditions, both of which recognize humanity’s necessary relationship with the natural world. Blackwell holds an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a BFA from Manhattanville College.
