SisterMonk is a female-powered, Djembe-driven band based in New York City. The group performs regularly at such venues as Bowery Electric, The Mercury Lounge, and Rockwood Music Hall. It also tours nationally and have played the Seattle “Folk Life” and at the Woodstock 50th Reunion. The band was featured in The Village Voice for its performance in the Make Music New York Festival and recently double-billed with Gogol Bordello at The Space in Westbury, New York. It has shared the stage with such notable acts as Zap Mama, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Anoushka Shankar, David Bouley, and others. SisterMonk has been described by The New York Music Daily as, “slinky, undulating, wickedly danceable punk-infused funk and Middle Eastern-inspired jams. There’s no band in New York anything like them.”
