Cyclical Everything
Cyclical Everything
About the project
At the Elmont-UBS Arena Station, a series of vibrant glass panels and geometric metal railings by the graphic artist Shawna X enliven the first new Long Island Rail Road station built in almost 50 years. Titled "Cyclical Everything", the artwork uses an oval motif referencing the nearby racetrack and arena. The form represents the evolving and transformative nature of Elmont and the many distinctive cultures at home around the historic Belmont Park racetrack.
A series of ten vivid glass panels saturate the station overpass. Bodies in motion appear within pulsating oval forms, referencing the musicians, athletes, and performers at the newly built UBS Area. Tom Patti Designs fabricated the glass artwork transforming Shawna X’s bold colorful shapes into multidimensional colors with varying opacities.
Metal railings on the eastbound platform and ramp of the westbound platform echo the glass panels by abstracting the symbolic track motif into striking rhythmic forms. Fabricated by KC Fabrications, the black metal panels feature lines of varying widths alluding to the constant of the Belmont Park racetrack, a hamlet that has evolved significantly throughout its history, from farmland to the residential neighborhoods of a diverse community and nationally recognized education system.
