Bronx Local Bus Network Redesign

The Bronx Local Bus Network Redesign was a transformative project that improved bus service in the borough, making it faster, more frequent, more reliable, and better connected to the subway. Speeds on redesigned routes outperformed the systemwide trend by 4%, customer satisfaction rose by 2%, and total ridership has exceeded the rolling baseline by more than 6%.

About the project

The Bronx Local Bus Network Redesign was a transformative project that improved bus service in the borough, making it faster, more frequent, more reliable, and better connected to the subway.

We implemented the Redesign changes on June 26, 2022. As part of the plan, 13 Bronx bus routes changed, and we launched two new routes.

The new bus routes are simpler and more direct, with more frequent service and improved bus stop spacing. The goal is to improve Bronx bus riders’ commutes and provide better service.

You can check out route profiles for every local Bronx bus route to see how service on your route changed when the Redesign was implemented. (Note: Service changes on the Bx5, Bx6, and Bx6-SBS have been postponed until MetroCard is retired and OMNY is fully deployed.)

We are also working with our partners at the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) to create new bus priority corridors. These have street improvements, such as new bus lanes, that allow the MTA to operate faster service. Learn more about these bus priority projects.

The Six Month Evaluation, released in February 2023, marked the completion of the Local redesign.
