Elevator replacements

Updated May 1, 2024

Regular elevator replacements are crucial to keep our system running effectively and efficiently. Replacing elevators now means less repair—and fewer disruptions to your travel—needed later. That’s why we’re investing in this Capital Program to replace and modernize more than 50 elevators across our system.

Unfortunately, this means we have to take elevators out of service for several months while we replace them. We recognize these planned outages can disrupt your travel plans. But by removing elevators from service proactively to replace them, we can avoid future unplanned outages, which are especially disruptive since they provide no opportunity to plan for alternatives during the outage.

Be sure to check our Elevator & Escalator Status page for the latest information on which elevators are out of service, how to plan accessible routes around these outages, and when they are expected to be running again.

What does replacing an elevator entail?

A lot of work goes into replacing an elevator. Here’s what we do when we take an elevator out of service for replacement:

  • Full replacement of elevator cab and associated equipment within the cab, shaft, and pit.
  • Modifications to the shaft and pit needed to accommodate new equipment. We update equipment to ensure the elevator ride is smoother and the elevator is more reliable in the future.
  • Replacing and modernizing all elevator machine room equipment for better and more reliable service.
  • Replacing and modernizing all CCTV cameras and fire alarm equipment for enhanced security.
  • Upgrading the remote monitoring equipment to allow us to respond more quickly and precisely if an elevator goes out of service.
