Communication-based train control (or CBTC) drastically improves the reliability of transit service. Here are details about how it works, how it benefits customers, and where we’re installing it in the MTA system.

Superstorm Sandy caused severe damage to 11 of our underwater tunnels, including the Rutgers Tunnel, which F trains use to cross the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The Interborough Express is a rapid transit project that would connect underserved areas of Brooklyn and Queens. It would substantially cut down on travel times between the two boroughs, reduce congestion, and expand economic opportunities in New York.

After Superstorm Sandy severely damaged the L tunnel in 2012, we started the L Project to improve the line's resilience, capacity, and accessibility. The project was completed in 2020.

Digital radio communication systems are critical to the operation of the Staten Island Railway and MTA buses. We’re replacing our old analog radio systems with new, more efficient, more reliable 700 & 800 MHz digital radio communication systems.

In 2008, Congress passed the Rail Safety Act. This required passenger and some freight railroads to implement Positive Train Control (PTC). PTC is an integrated command, control, and communication system for better managing trains.

As part of our long-term commitment to systemwide accessibility, we are investing nearly $6 billion in station accessibility in the 2020-2024 Capital Program, to make 70 stations newly ADA accessible and modernize an additional 78 subway elevators.

We are partnering with the New York City Departments of Transportation and City Planning to launch a study of the Utica Avenue Transit corridor. Our goal is to improve customer mobility by increasing transit reliability and reducing travel times.
