Day-by-day ridership numbers

We’re keeping this page up-to-date with systemwide ridership and traffic estimates for subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, Access-A-Ride, and Bridges and Tunnels. You can see changes over the past seven days, as well as get a sense of how ridership and traffic differs versus before the pandemic. Subway, bus, Access-A-Ride, and Bridges and Tunnels figures are compared with the equivalent day between 3/1/19 and 2/29/20. LIRR and Metro-North figures are compared with 2019 averages. We will generally update the page on weekdays, excluding holidays, with the prior day's figures. At times, data issues may delay the updates.

About the subway data: Subway ridership figures are determined from MetroCard and OMNY swipes and taps, and include ridership on the Staten Island Railway. Figures from recent days may be revised as data reconciliation processes are carried out.

About the bus data: Bus ridership figures through 9/30/20 were estimated from models that use MetroCard and OMNY swipes and taps and Automatic Passenger Counter data that is available on a portion of our bus fleet. These figures are indicative of ridership but not a precise count. Ridership figures from 10/1/20 onward are a count of MetroCard and OMNY swipes and taps plus an estimate of cash fares paid. Figures from recent days will be revised as data is transmitted from buses and reconciliation processes are carried out.

About the LIRR data: LIRR ridership is estimated by a model using monthly, weekly, ten-trip, and daily ticket sales. Percent change is calculated based on 2019 monthly average weekday/Saturday/Sunday ridership figures.

About the Metro-North data: Metro-North ridership is estimated by a model using monthly, weekly, ten-trip, and daily ticket sales. Percent change is calculated based on 2019 monthly average weekday/Saturday/Sunday ridership figures.

About the Access-A-Ride data: To provide timely updates, this data presents scheduled Access-A-Ride trips as an indicator of demand, rather than completed trips. The process to reflect completed trips, including adjusting for on-demand trips, cancellations, no shows, and on-street issues, would delay release of data for several weeks.
