Beginning the night of February 22 through the end of March, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., the LIRR Concourse Project will be removing the low-hanging “Headknocker” beams on the west side of the 33rd St Corridor. To protect the public during construction, sections of the Long Island Rail Road concourse will be closed during overnight hours. Alternate access to and from 8th Avenue will be available via the Hilton Corridor or the Upper Level. LIRR staff will be present on site to assist passengers navigating through the Concourse.
The removal of these beams is a major project milestone. Customers will soon catch a glimpse of the overhead space reclaimed for the public as part of the LIRR Concourse Project. In addition to raising the ceiling to a height of 18 feet, the project will nearly double the width of the corridor, improve lighting and air flow, and provide key accessibility upgrades to Penn Station.
